Agency celebrates and promotes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, culture and people on a local, national and international scale.

What We Do

Agency delivers a range of activities in Australia and overseas including art and built environment commissions, forums, digital initiatives and other innovative projects that increase profile and create wealth generation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, curators and cultural leaders.

Exhibitions

Our exhibition program showcases the creative practice of urban, regional and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Designed to connect contemporary artists with new audiences and collectors and celebrate the diversity of First Nations artistic practice, the exhibition program is First Nations led and provides professional development and economic return for First Nations artists and communities.

Importantly, all exhibitions provide an opportunity for audiences to go beyond the art, centering the artist’s practice through talks, video portraits and engagement.

International

Agency has a longstanding and established working knowledge of the significant impact of projecting a diverse and positive image of Australia through diplomatic channels, and the ability for projects like this to grow and inspire international understanding and appreciation of Australian cultures and creative practices.

Our significant international First Nations relationships and experience managing large scale projects and events across the globe, working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and institutions such as the Gropius Bau, Kluge Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection in Virginia and the Hood Museum in New Hampshire to develop talks and events for their audiences.

Digital

Agency is a frontrunner in the development of innovative digital resources for the sector.

From our award-winning digital mapping resource UPLANDS, to large scale art projections and the production of intimate artist portraits, we work with industry leaders to develop high quality digital products that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives, protect Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and promote data sovereignty, and aim to achieve equity of access to digital inclusion for First Nations people.

Talks

Our UNTOLD talks program brings together leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creative practitioners and thinkers from across Australia and beyond to shine a light on First Nations voices, thinking and lived experiences across a broad range of topics from caring for Country to the unseen work of women in communities.

Agency has presented UNTOLD talks across the country and beyond, including in regional and remote Australia and in partnership with organisations such as Sydney Contemporary, M Pavilion, Artbank, the Australian Embassy in Washington DC and the Yothu Yindi Foundation.

Events

Agency’s event programming encompasses large scale programming such as our 2024 Rubbish on the Shore Conference on Country, Cultural Conversations at Garma, International NAIDOC Week Programming in partnership with Embassies and Missions across the globe, First Nations Film Screenings, and bespoke programming and activations in and around industry events such as Sydney Contemporary, NGV Melbourne Design Fair and Craft Contemporary.

Publications

Agency Editions is a suite of publications developed by Agency in collaboration with publishing houses located both in Australia and overseas.

Comprising standalone, independent projects as well as publications produced in response to Agency’s wider set of activities and programs, projects to date include multilingual essays on artists, photographic folios and contemporary surveys of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, narratives and perspectives.

Residencies

In 2023 Agency launched Agency AiR (Artist in Residency), a program for First nations participants to promote cross-cultural exchange, delivered in collaboration with local, national and international partners.

Designed to provide safe and meaningful opportunities for engagement, professional development, up-skilling and relationship building to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants, and to support cross-cultural exchange, Agency AiR aims to drive focussed and high-quality experiences with a long-term impact.
